   Proposal Description:
   We seek to identify the level of cognitive impairment at which patients can no longer complete patient-reported outcome questionnaires. This information will be relevant to the design of all clinical trials that evaluate patient symptoms and health-related quality of life. The NACC data provide a unique opportunity to evaluate the psychometric properties of a widely-used patient-reported outcome questionnaire - the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), in a very large sample of adults with clinically defined cognitive status. In this proposed analysis, cognitive status will be defined primarily by Clinical Dementia Rating scores, and sensitivity analyses will define cognitive status by diagnosis (normal, MCI, dementia) or by Mini-Mental State Exam scores. The analysis will 1) compare rates of missing GDS data by cognitive status, and 2)test for measurement invariance in the GDS across levels of cognitive status.
